Washable paper towels: A guide to choosing and using them

Reusable paper towels combine the practical format of absorbent paper with a textile sheet that can be washed and reused. They can be used to wipe up a spilled drink, clean a table, wipe down a surface, or for everyday tasks.

However, not all models are alike. The material, thickness, dimensions, finishes, and number of sheets greatly affect the experience. Here are the useful criteria for choosing without being swayed by a vague promise.

What is a reusable paper towel?

It is generally an absorbent textile square or rectangle. Some sheets remain independent; others have snap fasteners to form a roll.

Unlike single-use paper, the textile sheet goes into the laundry when it is dirty. Once washed and dried, it returns to its place in the kitchen. The reasonable goal is not necessarily to eliminate all disposables overnight. A reusable paper towel can first replace simple and frequent uses: water, crumbs, surfaces, and small splashes.

Important criteria for choosing well

1. Absorbency

The word "absorbent" is not enough to compare two products. Look at the structure of the surface that comes into contact with the liquid, the advertised grammage, and, when the brand provides it, a test performed with a measured amount of water.

A useful test should explain its protocol: sheet dimensions, new or already washed condition, quantity poured, absorption time, and result after wringing. A spectacular demonstration without measurement makes comparison difficult.

2. Thickness and grammage

Grammage, expressed in grams per square meter, gives an indication of the textile's density. It does not solely measure absorption or longevity, but it helps distinguish a lightweight sheet from a more substantial textile.

Caspirolus sheets have a total grammage of 380 g/m². This characteristic should be evaluated along with the quality of the weaving, edges, and absorbent surface.

3. Material

Models are available in cotton, bamboo, viscose, polyester, or fiber blends. Each option has qualities and limitations. Synthetic microfiber can be absorbent and dry quickly, but the presence of plastic fibers deserves to be clearly indicated. Cotton is familiar and resistant, without automatically guaranteeing better environmental performance.

The correct information should specify the actual composition, the origin of any recycled material, and the certifications actually obtained. A word like "natural" or "ecological" does not replace these elements.

4. Dimensions

A 25 × 25 cm square offers a practical surface for usual kitchen tasks. A smaller sheet dries and stores easily; a larger sheet covers more surface but takes up more space in the machine and on the drying rack.

5. Finishes

Observe the seams, overlock stitching, and edge hold. A regular finish reduces the risk of fraying. If the product has snap fasteners, check that they are firmly attached and do not hinder the flat use of the sheet.

6. Number of sheets

The right number depends on the washing frequency and your usual consumption.

  • Five sheets are suitable for testing the system or covering a few targeted uses.
  • Ten sheets facilitate rotation when part of the batch is being washed or dried.
  • A heavy-consuming household can observe its habits for a week before buying more.

The best quantity is one that prevents running out of clean sheets while limiting unnecessary purchases.

With or without snap fasteners?

Snap fasteners do not make the sheet more absorbent. They mainly change storage and the way it is used.

Without snaps, the sheets can be stacked, folded, or placed in a basket. They are easy to grab, and no rigid element touches the cleaned surface.

With snaps, the sheets assemble to form a roll. This presentation is familiar and decorative but requires reattaching the sheets after washing. At Caspirolus, snap fasteners remain optional to allow each household to choose.

How to use a reusable paper towel?

Start with easy uses:

  • absorbing water or a cold drink;
  • wiping a table;
  • removing crumbs;
  • cleaning a worktop with a compatible product;
  • drying a small area after cleaning.

After light use, rinse the sheet and let it dry. When it is stained or has been used for significant dirt, place it in the laundry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Avoid hot surfaces, corrosive products, and uses for which hygiene rules require immediate disposal. For raw meat juices or other sensitive food contaminations, wash the sheet without delay according to a program suitable for the textile and your household's sanitary recommendations.

How to wash it and preserve its absorbency?

Always start with the product label. For Caspirolus sheets, the recommended washing temperature is 30 to 40 °C.

  1. Do not leave a damp sheet crumpled up.
  2. Quickly rinse off dirt that could dry.
  3. Dry the sheet before storing it in a closed laundry basket.
  4. Dose detergent correctly.
  5. Check the compatibility of any stain remover with the printed textile.
  6. Let it dry completely before storing.

A decrease in absorbency can result from product buildup, insufficient rinsing, or a textile at the end of its life. Avoid increasing detergent doses without a diagnosis.

Is it really more ecological?

A reusable sheet can reduce the number of disposable sheets consumed during its period of use. This alone does not allow us to claim that a product is "ecological" in all situations.

The overall assessment depends notably on the material, manufacturing, lifespan, transport, number of washes, machine load, and end of life. A serious comparison must state its assumptions and avoid masking a transfer of impact.

The DGCCRF reminds that an environmental claim must be clear, precise, verifiable, and justified by evidence. At Caspirolus, we therefore prefer to speak of a washable and reusable product, designed to replace part of disposables, rather than promising an overall benefit without a complete study.

The case of Caspirolus paper towels

Caspirolus models are offered in packs of five 25 × 25 cm sheets, with an advertised total grammage of 380 g/m². The front has a printed cat pattern, and the back has an absorbent waffle texture. Eight patterns are available, and snap fasteners remain optional.

This configuration is aimed especially at people who want a thick sheet, visible in the kitchen, and easy to integrate into their habits. The synthetic composition must be taken into account, as well as absorbency, format, and price.

Frequently asked questions

How many reusable paper towels do you need?

A pack of five allows you to test common uses. Two packs offer more comfortable rotation for a household that washes its laundry less often.

Can they be used like paper towels?

They cover many simple uses, but not necessarily all. Keep a suitable solution for sensitive contaminations, aggressive products, and situations requiring single use. Consult our comparison between reusable paper towels and disposable paper towels to choose for each use.

Are snap fasteners necessary?

No. They mainly serve to form a roll and group the sheets. They do not improve absorbency.

At what temperature should they be washed?

Follow the manufacturer's label. Caspirolus paper towels are indicated for machine washing at 30 or 40 °C.

Is a reusable paper towel zero waste?

It can reduce some usage waste, but it itself has manufacturing, packaging, maintenance, and an end of life. "Reusable" is a more precise description than "zero waste" without a detailed study.

Open data on prices

To make comparisons verifiable, essuietoutlavable.fr publishes a downloadable barometer of price per sheet. Among the seven public offers recorded in France on July 10, 2026, the calculated price ranged from €2.80 to €6.90 per sheet, with a median of €4.78. One offer was on promotion, and another displayed an "starting from" price.
